Oakland

They were talking about the economy in California on the radio a couple days ago. Oakland was mentioned, they said we were around 20% unemployment compared to the 11% national average. But that the big number was the poverty level. “This is not about middle-class people struggling to get by,” the commentator said, “this is about people who were already struggling now entering the can’t-get-by situation.” Apparently poverty in Oakland is at “near Depression levels”. I knew it was bad, but to hear just how bad it is on the radio, was especially poignant.

And then today, Sebastian Janikowski missed at last second, 32 yard field goal for the loss after he’d hit a 55 yarder earlier in the day. Oakland just can’t get a break.
