today i realized that the passion and emotion that makes male russian literary characters (and thus, russian literature) so interesting, would be considered really emo and whiny if they didn’t have names like Konstantin Dmitrich Levin and Rodion Ramanovich Raskolnikov and Ivan Fyodorovich Karamazov.

  1. or maybe…the oppressive atmosphere of their environment?because like…if their stories took place in America…say suburban America, we’d be like, what do they have to complain about?

  2. that might be true, but like in anna karenina, for instance, even the men in higher society, officers and gentlemen, act in this way.but i think americans are just considered whiny and spoiled in general (yes, even by other americans, like us!)
